She was born December 26, 1915, delivered at the family home in the Lee Building, in Bonner Springs, by her father, Dr. Loren Ezra Lee. Mom was the last of her siblings—Virginia, born in 1902; Paul, in 1904; and Emma, in 1907. Her father left medical practice after the terrible influenza epidemic of 1918-1919, and moved the family to a farm in the Kaw Valley, across the Kaw River from Bonner, which he had purchased in 1914. Mom grew up as a farm girl, gardening, feeding the chickens and gathering eggs, picking corn and potatoes, and helping with hay bailing. She attended school in Bonner, and attended the University of Kansas in Lawrence. She and Dad met on their way to KU on the Kaw Valley Inter-Urban, which ran from Kansas City, where Dad lived, to Lawrence. Mom attended KU for two years, took some business courses, and worked as a secretary for a few years. Dad—Robert L. Boyce, Jr.–graduated from KU Law College in 1936, and started his law practice in Kansas City, supplementing his income by playing piano in the evenings, as he had done while in college. Mom and Dad were married in November, 1939, and first lived in Kansas City, Kansas. Their first son, Robert Laurence, III, was born September 8, 1940, and their second son, Michael Lee, was born July 31, 1943. The family lived in Topeka, Kansas for a while, and shortly after Mike was born moved to Washington, D.C., where Dad had a job with the Department of Commerce. He joined the Army in 1944 and the family returned to Kansas to live with Mom’s parents on the farm until he got out of the Army after World War II. The family then lived in Bonner Springs and Dad picked up his law practice in Kansas City. A third son, Brian Loren, was born February 17, 1952. Mom was a life-long member of the Bonner United Methodist Church, which was important in her life and the family’s life. (Dad taught Sunday School for several years.) Family was important to Mom—her sisters and brother, her parents Loren and Enna Virginia (“Virgie”), her aunts and uncles and cousins. She and her family visited relatives in California and Texas several times in the 1920s, and they made trips to Missouri to visit relatives there throughout her life. Her proudest accomplishment she counted as raising her sons. Other things important to Mom were gardening, birds, music, and knowledge (a lifelong reader, she read mostly non-fiction books). She was a member of Eastern Star all her life, a member of PEO, and served on the Bonner school board from 1953-1961. After the boys left home, Mom and Dad enjoyed going on road rallies in the sports car, and made several trips abroad, touring Europe and England on their own. She and her sister Emma visited the Holy Land, Egypt, and Europe. She leaves her sons, Robert Laurence Boyce, III, of Lincoln, Nebraska, and his two sons, David Arthur Boyce and James Matthew Boyce, his wife Karen, and their children, Alexa Madison, Nathan Lucas, and Ashlyn Grace; Michael Lee Boyce and his wife Barbara, of Kansas City Kansas, and their children, Michelle Lea Lynne and her husband David of Basehor, Kansas, and their children, Jami and Kodi; Donald and Robin Hilt of Linwood, Ks., their children Jessica of Topeka, Ks., Donald Jr. and Bradley; Roy Roger Hilt of Bonner Springs, Ks.; and Larry Hyatte and his children, Emily, Cody, Sally and Abby; and Brian Loren Boyce and his wife Kaylyn of Lawrence, Kansas, and their daughter Lily Lee Boyce, of Washington, D.C.
